   RIVIERA HIGHWAY   It is difficult to believe that only 200 years ago a direct coastal main road between Torquay and Paignton did not exist. Your route would have been along ancient country lanes between Cockington and Preston, rising and falling twixt hill-top and coombe, well inland from the sea. In 1840, six years before the Harveys began the construction of Hesketh Crescent and nineteen years before the railway opened to Paignton, the decision to build a coast road was made and the Torquay Turnpike Trust was formed in order to finance its creation and maintenance.   The work took two years to complete with the new turnpike road opening in 1842. The route of the road was not popular with  everyone! Henry George Cary, owner of Torre Abbey, much against his will, lost the fight to have the road routed inland of his residence and his uninterrupted view of the sea from his drawing room. It is said the decision brought about his early death, of a broken heart!           Turnpike toll gates were positioned along the road and, understandably, were very unpopular, sometimes with unforeseen consequences. Toll Gate Abuse - 1849   "A fish dealer of Brixham, named Hudson, committed a serious assault on a female collector of tolls at the Solomon's Post turnpike gate last month. He has, it appears, been in the habit of very frequently passing the gate without paying. The woman was closing the gate when Hudson drove over her and she lies in a very dangerous state."   A section of the early road under Rock Walk, together with its associated toll gate can be seen in the illustration above. The turnpike and associated tolls came to an end in 1874 and speedier movement gradually developed. Okay, we are not used to so much snow on the English Riviera.... and we are pleased to report that this evening it has now mostly disappeared and we are back to what we know as normal in our little corner of the country!   The sun was starting to make an appearance earlier, and it was great to see families walking along the beach with their ice creams!   We would like to thank all our guests and membership owners of week 10, especially Friday arrivals,  for heeding our advice and not travelling during yesterday's treacherous conditions.   Everything is now back to normal. Please drive carefully and we have the keys to your apartments ready for you whenever you arrive. Remember, if you are going to be arriving after 6pm tomorrow or during the week to let us know by calling 01803 209600. Due to the adverse weather conditions in Torbay today, we have had to make the decision to close our offices. Here at the Osborne Apartments, we have been busy making what we think are some super improvements! Many eagle-eyed owners and guests will have noticed that we are now using 'Osborne Apartments' in our branding and marketing to enable us to reflect more accurately our product. Don't worry, those of you who are members with us are very much still part of the 'Osborne Club'!    From the moment you arrive with us for your next visit, you will have a warm welcome from our new Reception office which is located on the ground floor. No more having to go up and down the stairs to get your keys. The old office on the ground floor is now a welcome area, for you to come and have a chat about what's on during your stay, discuss holiday bookings or your membership with us; or to find out more about our holiday membership scheme.     Now taking bookings through Online Travel Agents, we are already seeing an upturn in our rental market as more and more people are finding us online! Booking directly with us is always best however, and our office is now open until 6pm every day including Sundays, and 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays.   Are you on social media? Hesketh Crescent was commissioned by Sir Lawrence Palk, the Fourth Baronet who was elevated to a peerage in 1880 and became ‘Lord Haldon, of Haldon, Devon’ and after whom Haldon Pier and Haldon Road were named.   The crescent was designed by the brothers William and John Harvey and was completed in 1848, taking two years to construct.  It has been reported as being ‘The finest crescent of houses in the west of England’ and John Wilson wrote “The Regency ideals of London and Brighton reached their highest in the building of Hesketh Crescent.”   The crescent originally called ‘Meadfoot Crescent’ was renamed ‘Hesketh Crescent’ in 1849 after the first fruit of Sir Lawrence’s marriage to Maria Hesketh in 1845; their first son was called Sir Lawrence Hesketh Palk.   The Palk family had been notable landowners in and around Torquay for generations and produced the first town plan for Torquay.   The family fortunes were largely made by the first Baronet, Sir Robert Palk, who became Governor of Madras in 1763, and after whom were named Palk Straights, the Palonua Range and Palk Bay.  It was he who bought Manor of Torwood from the Earl of Donegal and the fishing village of Tor Key in 1768.  He was the friend, protégé and colleague of General Lawrence on whose death he inherited £80,000 in 1775.  The General requested that his own name ‘Lawrence’ should be passed on to Sir Robert’s first son and those of succeeding generations.   Why not pop along and look at the spleandour of our stunning building and find out more about taking a holiday with us?...
